Welcome
to our Newbie Support Page
This is Dedicated to the Newbie in you. It will explain:
How to get movies from FTPs and FSERVES,
How to operate an FTP,
How to view movies after you download them, and
The Basics of FSERVES, FTP Servers, And Running Timers.
FTP sites
First of all, FTP Stands For 'File Transfer Protocol'. If you are
new to all
this, you probably don't already have a ftp program. They can be
downloaded from
basically anywhere on the Internet and some can be very small.
The Best\Most
Popular One out there right now is called CuteFTP, all the ops in
#freemovies
know how to use it, and will give you assistance learning the
program. The best
place to download it is at www.download.com
or www.tucows.com These are
both
sufficient Download Sites, each having many different ftp
programs to meet your
individual style. Most people would recommend CuteFTP for
beginners.
Here is a short example of using CuteFTP.
Once the CuteFTP program is installed and run, you need to click
the Yellow
Lightning Bolt at the top left corner, or by hitting the File
button, then
Quick Connect, or, just Ctrl-F4. Then a screen will pop up that
looks kinda like
a form. Next you will have to go back into mIRC and see what the
ftp you wants
"Address" is -- it is in the form of a number, for
example: 24.65.123.456,
that is what is called an IP Address, or in CUTEFTP, the Host
Address. You will
need to put the IP Address in the Host Address slot.
Step 2, In mIRC, the FTP Ad should have mentioned a Login, and
Password. Copy
them to the appropriate slots. Remember, most FTP's logins and
passwords are
Case Sensitive (capital vs small letters make a difference), so,
a password
saying 'Movies' isn't the same as 'movies'. Just to let you know
-- some, or
most ftp ads will give a port number. The FTP server listens on
that port for
your connection. To set the port number, you hit the advanced tab
at the top,
and in the Port Selection Area, change the Port to the FTP Server's
Port,
(the Default is 21). Then you Click 'OK' and from this point on,
it should be
basically self-explanatory. If you need any more help from this
point on,
ask your question in the channel and an op(@ in front of name) or,
a voiced
person(+ in front of name) will try to help you if they are
around.
Another help file explaining how to use Cute FTP is available.
Just ask for it
in the channel.
FSERVES
FSERVE stands for File Servers and are run primarily from mIRC.
The way to get
into a FSERVE is to type the trigger in the channel, examples of
triggers are:
Billy Bob, !Billy Bob, or /ctcp joejoe Billy Bob. Those are the
most popular
triggers, the billy bob part is all specified by the FSERVE host.
For example,
on one FSERVE the Trigger might be: !Billy Bob, and on another it
might be
just: I Love Peaches -- they are picked by the server's
preference. An FSERVE
is operated like the MS-DOS O/S. Here is a common list of
Commands, and what
they do:
DIR - Lists the contents of the current Directory
CD - Changes Directory e.g. cd Movies
GET - Gets a File e.g. get TheNameOfAMovie.asf
READ - Reads a File e.g. read Instructions.txt
HELP - A List of Commands or Help Comes Up
QUIT - The Proper Way to Leave An FSERVE
CD .. - To go Up one Directory in the directory tree
QUEUES - List all the queued files waiting to be sent
SENDS - List all the files currently being sent by the FSERVE
HELP - Display the help text for the FSERVE
Those are all the common Commands For an FSERVE. All FSERVEs are
different,
and have their own unique commands. Those commands are self-explanatory,
or,
if you need help, Please, don't worry about asking someone!
When you type an FSERVE's trigger and there is an open slot, you
will get a
chat window. You type the commands in that chat window once it
appears.
If you type a trigger and don't get a chat window, it means that
all the slots
are full. Just wait a while and try again later.
Each FSERVE has a SEND and QUEUE limit. Once the send limit and
queue limit
is reached for that FSERVE, you won't be able to get a file until
a send
finishes and opens up a QUEUE slot.
Have patience and keep trying - eventually you will get into a
slot.
Once you get on, type DIR to see what is available on the FServe.
Anything
in ALL CAPS is a directory, and lower case are the files.
You do not have to stay on the FSERVE (keep the chat window open)
to be able
to receive the file(s) you queued. In fact, if you do you are
tying up a
FSERVE slot and you may get kicked off the FSERVE and your QUEUES
might get
removed. You do need to stay on IRC to get any queued files.
Veiwing Movies
As a Prerequisite for Chapter 3, you must have a movie downloaded
already. This
is not showing you how to download movies, just, how to view them.
There are
many movie formats out there -- ASF, AVI, DIV/X, MOV, MPEG, and
RM. The average
movie size of a ASF is about 400 megabaytes. MPEG's are way, way
larger in size
-- they are approximatly 1 Gigabyte. Smaller means poorer quality.
It's a
trade-off between size (download time) and quality. A Normal MPEG
is in 2
parts, and these are usually burned to a cd as raw MPEG or as
VCDs. You might
ask, why would someone download an MPEG when a ASF, or AVI file
is so much
smaller. The difference folks is Picture Quality. Some ASF files
are poor
quality, and some, gasp, are almost unwatchable. ASF, and AVI
files are viewed
in a program which, if you're running Win98 is already installed
on your
computer, called Windows Media Player. This is the best viewer to
run ASF's and
AVI files. nAVI's, with the same extension of AVI, and still run
in Windows
Media Player, but, has a much better quality picture than an ASF,
but, basicly
the same size. There is only one problem -- you need to download
a patch for
Windows Media Player so it can run these awesome files. The patch
is available
from a web site: http://shadowrealm.fuckyou.org. They are the
Creator's of the
nAVI File Format, and put out these movies [smr].
DIV/X is a revolutionary new mpeg4 based compression codec
distributed in
.AVI container files. It is *NOT* related to the old defunct DVD
Rental
system. It is a codec that allows dvd quality video to be
compressed
without loss to a size small enough to fit on one cd for a full
length
movie with cd audio quality. NOTICE: Due to the fact that Div/X
is an
extremely new video format, it requires a codec to be installed
for
Windows Media Player in order to view it. Without first
installing the codec,
you won't be able to watch any DIV/X files. The codec is
contained in a file
called divx_3d.exe or divx_3e.exe which you should be able to get
from someone
or the internet. This format is more compressed than MPEG, but
many like it
because they feel that the quality is much better than ASF. As
more people
experiment with it, it very well could become the most preferred
format.
A few more words about MPEG. The MPEG Movie format has the
windows file
extension of .mpg and is the best movie format out there (for
full length
movies). You can run it in Windows Media Player, but, if you
would like to
enhance your viewing pleasure, I would recommend downloading a
viewer called
XING MPEG Player -- it can be downloaded at http://www.XingTech.com
but there
is a long road to finding it, and I suggest taking this shortcut
to the Xing
MPEG Player Home Page: http://www.xingtech.com/video/mpeg/player
FTP Serving
So, you think you got what it takes to compete with the big
boys, huh? Well,
lets give you a shot. To Start, you need to download a FTP
Serving Program.
The most used Serving Program right now is called Serv-U and can
be downloaded
at http://www.download.com
or http://www.tucows.com and
is a great program. To
think you're Capable of running an FTP Server, you should have at
least a basic
understanding of FTP's, and how things work all around on the
computer. From
that point on, you need to, install it, and, get an all around
feel for the
Serv-U program. This is NOT going to give you a tutorial on that
program, because,
included with the download is a full manual on how to run the
program, and,
everything you need to know. There are several program's to use,
but Serv-U
is an all-around good program, and it isn't to hard to learn. If
the Manual
doesn't Help you, Just Ask an Op Or Voiced Person in #Freemovies
and i'm sure
they would be glad to help you. :)
mIRC
Advertising
Now, you got an FTP Site, AND, you want everyone to know. In this
chapter,
you'll learn how. Setting up an Ad isn't that hard, once you grip
the initial
Components, The Way it Works Is: You type in any chat window (Preferably
the
Status Window)
/timer# (# of times ad is to be Displayed) (# Sec Delay) /msg #Channel
Your FTP Ad
An example is:
/timer1 20 300 /msg #Freemovies Visit My Ftp, 24.65.123.456 Port
21 Login: Billy Password: Bob. Be Nice
You see, it is going to be played 20 times, every 300 seconds. It
will
message #freemovies and Say "Visit My FTP, 24.65.123.456
Port 21 Login: Billy Password: Bob. Be Nice
It is a basic FTP Ad, but yet, still, very effective. Another
thing to spice up your
Ads is to add color. Right before the text you desire to change,
press CTRL-K and
in mIRC a small color chart will pop up asking what color you
want.
For Example:
/timer 20 300 /msg #Freemovies Visit My Ftp, 24.65.123.456 Port
21 L: Billy P: Bob. CTRL-K 9 Be Nice
